Ways to Volunteer
Volunteers provide critical support to our students.
Our Windows and Mirrors Program asks volunteers to support students as a “classmate,” adding new dimension to discussion.
Our Thought Partner Program asks volunteers to join a workshop navigating a literacy activity.
Interested corporate groups can explore more engagement opportunities on our Partnerships page.
Volunteer opportunities take place during the school day in Pre-K – 12th grade
classrooms throughout Manhattan and the Bronx, and workshops run 60 – 90 minutes.
In addition to a short training video, you will receive workshop-specific
guidelines before each opportunity.
Both the teacher and PC are in the classroom
for the entire session, and teaching experience is not necessary.

Please submit this brief questionnaire to share your interests and availability. After registering for GoPass, you will receive bi-monthly email announcements with new workshop dates as they are posted.
Behind the Book will register you for GoPass, a fingerprint and background check system that screens volunteers working with vulnerable populations. Passholders can volunteer with the Department of Education and countless organizations across NYC.
We’ll keep you up-to-date regarding current volunteer opportunities with emails and website postings. You can choose the slots that best match your interests and availability. Behind the Book will send a confirmation email with an address, time, and coaching tips.
New Volunteers
All volunteers must sign a photo release. If you’ve signed one in the past,
you don’t have to fill it out again.
