BtB works with classes at all ability levels- from general education to English language learners to special education. Our programs are flexible and can be scaffolded to meet students where they are on their learning journey.

Author & Book Choice:

Program coordinators and teachers choose a book based on student reading levels and language proficiency. In ELL programs the books, like the authors, are usually bilingual to ensure student understanding.

Scaffolded Work:

Graphic organizers are created to meet the needs of all students, regardless of their proficiency in the English language.

Vocabulary Lists:

These include videos with pictures and voiceovers pronouncing the words, which gives them meaning and context.

Art:

Allows students to directly connect with the book in another medium, fostering non-verbal understanding of larger themes and personal expression.

Drama Workshops:

Helps English language learners learn effective non-verbal communication skills—including facial expressions and gestures—and provides a different way to express ideas about the book.

Volunteers:

When possible, BtB provides volunteers who speak the same language(s) as the students. Volunteers are matched one-on-one or with a small group to help students with research and writing prompts.

Verbal Presentations:

Speaking a new language aloud is an important skill, and our programs provide many opportunities through discussions, reading out loud, and peer critique. Students get to practice in a safe environment and build confidence in their newly acquired skills.
