Behind the Book uses a positive youth development framework to motivate students to read and write while inspiring a lifelong love of learning. Our programs are culturally responsive and reflect the diverse backgrounds and interests of our students.

Social Justice

We are advocates and accomplices in the fight for social justice and positive change. Through our centering of diverse books and authors, we empower individuals to see themselves as change makers. We actively examine our roles in perpetuating inequitable systems and strive to create environments where students can question and challenge the status quo.

Creative Self-Expression

Creativity and imagination are foundational to our culture. Behind the Book empowers individual self-expression and nurtures unique voices and talents by highlighting the connectivity between the fine arts, literature, drama, and social activism. We cultivate an open and accepting community where people can express themselves without judgment.
