About the Organization

Behind the Book (BtB) inspires young people to cultivate their vast potential through programs centered on diverse books and their authors. BtB works primarily with K–12 students from Title I schools and low-income communities. We foster a love of reading and champion the transformative power of storytelling. Our programs empower students to explore storytelling and arts as tools for self-expression, develop critical thinking and social-emotional skills, and build meaningful

connections with their peers and the world.


Position Overview
The Program Coordinator is responsible for designing, planning, and implementing educational programs centered on diverse books and their authors. This position requires curriculum development, direct instruction (at least 3x/week), relationship building with partners, coordination of logistics, and related administrative duties. The ideal candidate is a dynamic educator with a passion for literature, youth development, and educational equity. The Program Coordinator reports to the Director of Programs and collaborates closely with fellow Program Coordinators, program interns, and other relevant staff. The position starts August 3, 2026.


Key Responsibilities

Program Design, Curriculum Development, Teaching & Student Engagement

  • Design engaging, culturally affirming, and age-appropriate programs using intrinsic motivation strategies.

  • Develop and facilitate interactive lesson plans that promote literacy, critical thinking, and meaningful collection.

  • Manage program supplies

  • Produce program materials, including graphic organizers, to scaffold the diverse needs of students, including Special Education and English Language Learner (ELL) students.

  • Adapt lessons to meet student needs, school-specific needs, and program objectives.

  • Foster an inclusive, supportive environment that centers student voice and creativity.

  • Build strong partnerships with classroom teachers to ensure effective program delivery.

  • Work with and mentor interns for program delivery.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Programs and team to continuously improve programming

    and foster a strong, collaborative culture.

    Program Coordination, Administration & Team Collaboration

  • Manage logistics for assigned programs: scheduling, field trips, author visits, guest

    speakers, transportation, and materials.

  • Maintain accurate records and track essential program data, including consent forms,

    surveys, and teacher agreements.

  • Help coordinate student projects, including student books.

  • Coordinate with relevant staff to help facilitate volunteer engagement.

  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development sessions, and training.

  • Support program evaluation, grant reporting, and documentation as needed.

  • Coordinate communication with program interns to facilitate the logistics and operations of programs.

  • Other relevant duties as assigned by the Director of Programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field (preferred).

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching or leading educational programming in a K–12 setting.

  • Strong lesson planning skills and classroom management.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational abilities.

  • Demonstrated creative aptitude.

  • Deep passion for literature, arts-based education, storytelling, and community building.

  • Commitment to educational equity, youth empowerment, and inclusive practices.

  • Experience working with students with disabilities and ELLs is preferred.

  • Attention to detail with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in G Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, and Word; experience with Airtable is a plus.

  • Familiarity with the NYC Department of Education and its stakeholders is a plus.

  • Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply (languages such as Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin are especially needed).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $60,000 – $65,000 annually.

  • Benefits include 75% health care coverage.

  • A flexible hybrid work environment (2 remote days).

  • 20 days paid vacation plus holidays and a week off between Christmas and the New Year.
