WHO: Helen Benedict is the author of four books of nonfiction and the novels A World Like This , Bad Angel , and The Sailor's Wife . Her latest novel is The Opposite of Love . Helen has published articles, essays, and reviews in The New York Times , The Washington Post , The Nation , The Women's Review of Books , and elsewhere. She is at work on a new novel as well as a nonfiction book, The Lonely Soldier: Women at War in Iraq , to be published in 2009. A former newspaper reporter, she is a professor of journalism at Columbia University .  

Felicia Luna Lemus is the author of the novels Like Son and Trace Elements of Random Tea Parties . Her writing has appeared in anthologies including That's So You , Fifteen Candles: 15 Tales of Taffeta, Hairspray, Drunk Uncles, and Other Quinceañera Stories , A Fictional History of the United States With Huge Chunks Missing , Bottom's Up , and in magazines including BOMB and The Believer . She has taught fiction writing at universities The New School and U.C.L.A.

Karen Russell is the author of the short story collection, St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves. She has been featured in both The New Yorker's debut fiction issue and New York magazine's list of twenty-five people to watch under the age of twenty-six. She is a graduate of the Columbia MFA program and is the 2005 recipient of the Transatlantic Review/Henfield Foundation Award. Her fiction has recently appeared in Conjunctions , Granta , Zoetrope , Oxford American , and The New Yorker .

Behind the Book is a literacy nonprofit working with low-income students in NYC public schools.  Our mission is to excite children and young adults about reading.  Working in the 1st-12th grades, we bring authors and their books into individual classrooms to build literacy skills and a new generation of book readers.   www.behindthebook.org
