WHO:

Mary Gordon is the author of the novels S pending, The Company of Women, The Rest of Life, Final Payments, and The Other Side , as well as the memoir The Shadow Man . She has received a Lila Wallace--Reader's Digest Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the 1997 O. Henry Prize for best story. She teaches at Barnard College and lives in New York City.

Maxine Swann has been awarded the Ploughshares' Cohen Award for best fiction of the year, the O. Henry Prize, and the Pushcart Prize, and her work has appeared in The Best American Short Stories of 1998 and 2006. She is the author of two novels, Serious Girls and Flower Children . Swann, who has lived in Paris and Pakistan, now lives in Buenos Aires and New York.

Kelly Braffet is the author of Last Seen Leaving and Josie and Jack . She has also been published in When I Was a Loser: True Stories of (Barely) Surviving High School and has a story in the upcoming anthology Who Can Save Us Now? , a collection of original superhero stories. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University , and currently lives in New York with her husband, Owen King, and their cats.

Behind the Book is a grassroots literacy nonprofit working with low-income students in NYC public schools. Our mission is to excite children and young adults about reading. Working in the 1st-12th grades, we bring authors and their books into individual classrooms to build literacy skills and a new generation of book readers.
