H.S. 670 Thurgood Marshall Academy For Learning And Social Change, Harlem, New York, District 5

May 6, 2009

Students learned about the contemporary effects of genocide by reading A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier in Sierra Leone who currently works for Human Rights Watch in New York. Ishmael held a classwide writing contest, the winners of which visited FSG publishing to meet Ishmael's editor and then went out for lunch with Ishmael and the class' teacher.

This visit concluded and complemented the class' study of the Holocaust.
