Authors Rita Williams-Garcia and Coe Booth each led fiction writing workshops for 9th-grade students. In preparation, students read Williams-Garcia's Like Sisters on the Homefront, a story about a cantankerous teenage mother who is sent to live with her great-grandomother and other family members in Georgia, and Booth's Tyrell, about a 15-year-old boy in the South Bronx determined to escape the circle of poverty. The program was so well-received that it was integrated as part of the standard 9th grade, first semester curriculum at BCAM.
