H.S. 670 Thurgood Marshall Academy For Learning And Social Change, Harlem, New York, District 5
Thurgood Marshall Academy was founded in 2001 upon the belief—articulated by the eponymous US Supreme Court
Justice—that all children have a right to a first-class education and the opportunity to reach their full potential. Behind the Book has helped Thurgood Marshall realize its mission by bringing to both high school and junior high school students renowned authors Patricia McCormick, Rita Williams-Garcia, Sharon Draper, Ishmael Beah, and Geoffrey Canada to lead discussions and various writing workshops. Tenth grade students studied Anne Frank with the support of author Francine Prose and visited the Anne Frank Center. This past year, Behind the Book worked with the entire 9th grade.
