A group of fifth-grade students worked with author Kai Jackson Issa and her book Howard Thurman’s Great Hope, about the life of one of the first leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Each student wrote and illustrated his or her own biography of a famous African-American. Students also formulated distinctions between hopes and dreams, and, through introspection, examined their personal characteristics to find which would help them reach their specific hopes and dreams and how.
