Isabel Hill, Urban Animals, Persuasive Writing Program with Isabel Hill (3 visits)

Workshop 1: March 29, 2011

Workshop 2: April 5, 2011

Workshop 3:

Grade 2

In another 2nd grade ELL class, Behind the Book is enhancing the persuasive writing unit by bringing in author Isabel Hill in late March and April. The students read Ms. Hill’s book, Urban Animals, which takes the reader on a tour of all the animals you can find on the facades of buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn. During her first visit, Ms. Hill led a neighborhood walk, helping students to notice the details that make places beautiful and pointing out the vocabulary from her book. Each student was armed with a camera with which they photographed their neighborhood. Back in the classroom, students chose one photograph to write about. All of the photographs and writing pieces were compiled into a class book by Behind the Book.

Despite the cold, students enjoyed the neighborhood walk.
