“How long? . . . Not long because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” This Martin Luther King speech formed the basis of the social justice unit the students in Ms. Cranston and Ms. Garcia’s 8th grade classes used to examine the civil rights movement of the 1960’s while reflecting on current civil rights newspaper headlines. The students began the unit by seeing the movie Selma, and identifying the civil rights leaders and activists of the 60’s. This study prepared them for their reading of One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia.
