Behind the Book’s annual corporate summer reading series is just around the corner.
The school year is quickly drawing to a close, and with 200 literacy workshops in K-12 classrooms nearly completed, Behind the Book is turning its attention to NYC’s literary loving adults. The corporate summer reading series is Behind the Book’s annual summer fundraising program, during which we bring award-winning authors into law firms for engaging readings, signings, and discussions with summer associates.
Since we launched the series in 2009, it has become a much sought-after, unique hosting opportunity for firms such as Sullivan & Cromwell, Kirkland & Ellis, Goldman Sachs, and Weil, Gotshal and Manges.
“After the Jennifer Egan lunch discussion, I want to hear the authors of everything I read!” – Naima Walker-Fierce, Former Sr. Director Legal Recruiting of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, after our 2013 reading
Following the event with Jennifer Egan in 2013, Weil, Gotshal and Manges hosted its second reading last July, when Behind the Book arranged an afternoon with Joan Biskupic, Supreme Court Correspondent and author of American Original, the Life and Constitution of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Approximately 40 of the firm’s summer associates attended. Ms. Biskupic’s discussion gave them an entertaining and insightful glimpse at the lives of the Supreme Court Justices she has written about, and the luncheon event showcased the depth of talent and cultural opportunities available to recruits considering working in this city.
Other authors who have read for us include Joshua Ferris, Victor LaValle, Tea Obreht, Karen Russell, Jim Shepard, Amy Waldman, Colson Whitehead and Meg Wolitzer among others.
The series provides a vital injection of funds for Behind the Book to kick-start the school year and each of the participating firms has directly contributed to the literacy enhancement we bring to low-income New York city public schools.
This summer we have literary hosting opportunities open to five professional firms. Throughout the year, we also offer reading events tailored to professional groups such as women’s initiatives, working parent groups or diversity groups.
