Job Opportunity: Development Manager

Behind the Book, a grassroots literacy nonprofit working with low-income students in New York City public schools, seeks a Development Manager. Behind the Book’s mission is to excite children and young adults about reading. Using personalized, curriculum-based programs, Behind the Book creatively engages students with the written word to motivate them to read more.

Behind the Book is in its sixth year of operation, and the incoming Development Manager will be instrumental in growing a small nonprofit with a successful grant record to its next stage. Behind the Book seeks a candidate with at least two years of work experience in a nonprofit fundraising environment and knowledge of the education sector, particularly in New York City. S/he will direct all aspects of the organization's fundraising activities, including grant writing and grants management, individual appeals, major-donor cultivation, corporate and foundation relations, and fundraising events. In addition, s/he will provide support to the Executive Director in developing strategic partnerships, cultivating important donor relationships, and public outreach.

This is a great opportunity for a dynamic, ambitious individual who has the ability to manage multiple, simultaneous assignments under tight deadline pressure, set priorities, and work independently. The Development Manager will make a significant contribution to growing Behind the Book, while gaining considerable skills, experience, and knowledge in nonprofit fundraising and leadership.

Additional Qualifications:

Candidates must have a B.A./B.S. and at least two to three years’ work experience in the development field.  Master’s degree preferred. Familiarity with the New York City fundraising environment, particularly foundation, corporate and government grants, is required, as well as familiarity with the New York City education landscape. Superior organizational and writing skills are required, as are strong computer skills in Microsoft Office. Must be detail-oriented and demonstrate discretion, initiative, and follow-through. Salary is commensurate with experience, education, and ability.

Behind the Book is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer that especially welcomes applications from women and people of color.
