7th grade students in East Harlem learned about the process of giving graphic form to individual stories they had written as part of a unit on fantasy fiction. Archie Comics writer Alex Simmons taught the class about the basics of comic strip creation and the process of creating physically formed characters for their stories.
Mr. Simmons took the class on a field trip to the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, where students had the opportunity to view and discuss work by contemporary comic artists such as Denis Kitchen and Liza Donnelly. Students practiced sketching while at the museum, gaining a feel for the illustration.
