Grade 6

The Dave at Night program was a multi-disciplinary study of the Harlem Renaissance that intertwined literature, history, creative writing, visual art, and music.  6th grade students at JHS 13 participated in this program that included visits with author Gail Carson Levine, two with artist Barbara Korein, and field trips to the National Jazz Museum of Harlem and the Apollo Theater.
Students began the program with a lesson on collage technique, which they used to personalize their reading journals.  They would later revisit this technique in creating an illustration in the style of Romare Bearden as part of their final project.  In addition, each student wrote an additional final chapter of the book.
Over the course of one month, students read Dave at Night and studied the Harlem Renaissance.  Prior to Gail Carson Levine’s first visit, students wrote the first draft of their final project (an extra chapter of the book).  During Ms. Levine’s visits, she explained the how to critique a peer’s writing in a constructive way.  Students practiced peer editing and reading their work aloud.  Having mastered performance in the classroom, students then took a field trip to the Apollo Theater, where they had a guided tour and were given the chance to perform on stage.
