Here at Behind the Book our mission is to inspire New York City public school students to love reading and writing. When a student finishes a program feeling proud, or even surprised, at what they’ve just achieved, we know we’ve engaged a young reader.
Jade is a first grader at PS 98 and was a part of our program in May. Her class worked on a reading and writing program with Julia Sarcone-Roach and her book Subway Story. Jade’s class was asked to illustrate with words and pictures how they would recycle an old subway car- just like in the book. When they finished the program this spring, Jade couldn’t believe what she’d achieved. This is exactly what we aim to inspire in all of our students through our programs.
“Writing can be so much fun. I didn’t know that I could write so much before. This was the first time I wrote the end of the story.” – Jade
And we’re sure it won’t be the last time! Great work Jade!
