Workshop 1: November 4, 2011
Grades 11 and 12
In spring of 2010, students began a community garden at DeWitt. In the fall, they were able to harvest the garden’s first yield. That November, chef and restauranteur Bill Telepan visited the school and led a workshop on cooking and food. Mr. Telepan started by answer students’ questions, describing his life of a chef and restaurant owner, and discussing the importance of local produce and farms. He also talked about his collaboration with the program Wellness In The Schools, which teaches cafeteria workers and students how to cook with fresh ingredients.
Mr. Telepan then did a cooking demonstration, in which he made eggplant parmesan and turnips
flavored with cinnamon, using freshly picked ingredients from the DeWitt garden.
