Journal Making

Behind the Book piloted a new component to our middle school programs this year: journal making. At the beginning of the year, Behind the Book teaching artist, Barbara Korein, led a collage workshop for every Behind the Book class. Ms. Korein explained how just like writing, art was a reflection of your style and individuality. During the workshop the students created writing journals with collaged covers that represented them in some way. The idea was that if students created their own writing journals they would feel more
ownership over the entire writing process and might write more and more often.
