A 6th grade class read Bird by Zetta Elliott, a story of a boy whose older brother
dies suddenly, told through poetry. They worked with the author, Zetta Elliott, and the Behind the Book’s resident teaching artist, Barbara Korein, to create illustrated books. Ms. Elliott led a two-part writing workshop where students first wrote a post-card to someone who was far away, and then used wrote a story about that person. Then the students participated in a book making and illustration workshop led by Ms. Korein. The students created the covers and binding for their books out of recycled materials from Materials for the Arts.

Students work on creating covers for their books. |
