An 11th and 12th grade class in a year-long activism seminar on food politics and sustainability worked with three experts in the field: authors Elizabeth Royte, Novella Carpenter, and Marion Nestle. Inspired by the authors and their books, the students undertook a number of important endeavors, including reforming their school's recycling system, starting a school garden, and writing powerful spoken word poems to promote awareness in their community. The students put their poetry to music and created a music video that they hope will educate their peers. It can be seen on YouTube.  After a workshop on grant writing with Behind the Book's Director of Development, the class collaborated on a grant proposal for seed funding for a school garden. Last spring, the class created a vegetable garden with a grant they secured from The Citizens Committee of New York.
