Novella Carpenter is the author of Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, a memoir of how she created an small farm in an empty lot in urban Oakland, California. Students discussed their idea of creating a garden out of an unused plot on school grounds. Ms. Carpenter said of her visit:
"Those kids were the best thing I've experienced during my whole book tour. I wish I could move to the Bronx and become the farmer at DeWitt-Clinton."
Inspired by Ms. Carpenter, the students strengthened their resolve to start a school garden. Behind the Book's Director of Development led a grant writing workshop for the class and provided them with a list of funders they could apply to. They recently received their first grant from Citizens Committee for New York City.
