Grade 4
Doreen Rappaport led a Behind the Book program focused on her new book, The Perpetual Motion Machine: The Life of Theodore Roosevelt, for CS 21 fourth graders.
Prior to Ms. Rappaport’s visit, she suggested that the fourth grade students read No More! Stories and Songs of Slave Resistance and answer guiding questions she had written about
the book’s stylistic and historical aspects. Ms. Rappaport also asked that the students
not read about Theodore Roosevelt until her visit, so as to motivate them to research
any unclear points after hearing her detailed manuscript. Ms. Rappaport invited the
students to critique her work in order for her to perfect it.
