A mixed grade English class studying memoirs read Staceyann Chin’s memoir about growing up and surviving in Jamaica, The Other Side of Paradise. During her visit, Chin discussed her book with students, explaining the process she went through to write the book, and answering questions about the decisions she made as an author and what happened after the end of the book. Then the students, who had been working on short memoir pieces themselves, read their work to Chin, who gave them pointers and comments. Chin rounded out the visit with an explosive spoken word performance.
