Behind the Book Special Event

Family Literacy Night at PS 274
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
- 5:30pm to 8:30pm

Student and parent writing

Behind the Book directed P.S. 274’s Family Literacy Night to allow parents and guardians the opportunity to share in their students’ literary successes and experience Behind the Book’s work first-hand.  P.S. 274, a longtime partner school located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, hosted the event.  The program involved a writing and art workshop led by Colin Bootman, illustrator of Dad, Jackie, and Me.  Each family engaged in memoir-writing to create a book based on a family memory.

Family Literacy Night Crowd

The school cafeteria was filled to capacity as enthusiastic families discussed their many stories and memories, and worked together to bring them alive on paper. Through memoir-writing, parents and guardians were able to play an active role in their children's literacy education, and the children were proud to show off the writing and art skills they had gained in Behind the Book programs.
